Believed in Free Association Dream Analysis Looked deeply into the human psyche o Psyche: the mental or psychological structure of a person, especially as a motive force. Id

Present from birth Entirely unconscious instinctive and primitive Childlike Driven by pleasure principle o Strives for immediate gratification If this is not satisfied immediately anxiety or tension sets in. Example: Infant will cry until needs are met If the Ids needs were always met society

would be chaos. Ego Part of a persons personality that deals with reality. Develops from the Id o Develops to help the Id express needs in an acceptable manner Both in conscious and unconscious mind

Works on reality principle o Weighs costs and benefits of acting on impulses Works to delay gratification o It will allow the behavior to happen but only in the appropriate place Super Ego Holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society o Our sense of right and wrong

The Ego Ideal o Includes the rules and standards for good behaviors. o Approved of by parental and other authority figures. o Obeying these rules leads to feelings of pride, value and accomplishment. The Conscience o Includes information about things that are viewed as bad by parents and society. o These behaviors are often forbidden and lead to bad consequences, punishments or feelings of guilt and

remorse. Super Ego The superego acts to perfect and civilize our behavior. It works to suppress all unacceptable urges of the id and struggles to make the ego act upon set standards rather that upon realistic principles.

The superego is present in the conscious and unconscious. According to Freud, the key to a healthy personality is a balance between the id, the ego, and the superego. Which Character represents the Id, Ego, and Super Ego?
