BELL RINGER On your own or with a partner, think about a time when you went on vacation or travelled out of town. Brainstorm: List the technology that made it easier for you than someone who might have made this same trip 100 years ago. How did you get there? What did you do?

Where did you eat? What form(s) of WHO ARE THESE INVENTORS??? 2 1 3 4 NOTES: EARLY AMERICAN INVENTIONS

SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS CHANGED AMERICAN LIFE & IMPROVED OUR STANDARD OF LIVING. Four major changes to American society included: Increased factory & labor productivity. Transportation

(including the use of the automobile). Improved communication. Rural electrification. EXTENDED PROGRESS INTO ALL AREAS OF AMERICAN LIFE, INCLUDING NEGLECTED RURAL AREAS.

of : e n a l p r i A On December 17, 1903 brothers, Orville and Wilber Wright, will make the first

successful powered flight. Orville was the first to take off, at 10:35 a.m., and flew the Wright Flyer I for 12 seconds, covering a distance of 120 feet, against a 20-m.p.h. wind. The second and third flights covered 175 & 200 feet respectively. In the fourth and last flight, Wilbur remained aloft for 59 seconds and flew 852 feet. It will be the start of the aviation age travel will never be the same again.

COMMUNICAT ION & ENTERTAINME NT ELECTRIFICATION CHANGED AMERICAN LIFE: Four major changes: 1. 2. 3. 4. Electric lighting. Provided Entertainment. Improved communications.

Created Labor-saving products that made life easier. EFFECTS OF THE LIGHT BULB THOMAS ALVA EDISON INVENTED THE LIGHT BULB AND MECHANICAL USES OF ELECTRICITY. An Original

Edison Bulb and EFFECTS OF THE LIGHT BULB 1. Extends the work day. 2. Increases productivity. 3. Provides a measure of safety with the addition of street lights

and eliminating the need for propane lamps inside buildings. COMMUNICATI ON CHANGES: 1. 2. 3. Increased availability of telephones. Development of the radio and broadcast industry

TRANSPORTA TION Orville and Wilber Wright invented the first plane which flew in Kitty Hawk, NC on Dec. 17, 1903; this invention made it possible to travel by air. 1. Invention: Airplane Inventor(s) Name(s): Orville and Wilber Wright

Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Dec. 17, 1903 (Patented in March 1903) 2 interesting facts about the invention: Very important in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Wright brothers started working on bicycles, moved to gliders, then to planes. Impact on society:

Travel along long distances was quicker. Created a new industry. 2. Invention: Automobile Inventor(s) Name(s): Henry Year the Invention was created and/or patented:

Model Ford T invented and patented --1903 2 interesting facts about the invention: Ford could produce large quantities quickly and inexpensively. First affordable car. Model T and movable parts Assembly Line improved in 1908.

Impact on society: Jobs, Mobility, Travel, & created the modern suburb. COMMUNICAT ION & ENTERTAINME NT Communication & information distribution was improved by the invention of the telephone, telegraph, phonograph, motion pictures, and radio.

3. Invention: Telephone Inventor(s) Name(s): Alexander Year the Invention was created and/or patented: 1876 Graham Bell

(patented the same year) 2 interesting facts about the invention: Wanted people to say Ahoy not Hello. Marked the end of the telegraphy. Impact on society: Revolutionized communication (instantaneous communication). New Industry (ex: AT&T), jobs, socializing.
